The town layout drawn up by the Ashina clan in the early Edo period survives almost intact: the samurai quarter to the north, the merchant quarter to the south, separated by an open firebreak.

The heart of it is the samurai district (bukeyashiki-dori), where original residences, gates and storehouses still line the road. Few places in Japan preserve a samurai quarter of this scale in one piece, which is why the town draws history lovers and international travellers alike. On the day we walked it, roughly half the visitors around us were from overseas.

▶︎ Getting there:
Approx. 3 hours from Tokyo Station to Kakunodate Station on the Akita Shinkansen (Komachi)
Approx. 20 minutes on foot from Kakunodate Station to the samurai district

Best Things to Do in Kakunodate

1. Walk the samurai district

The samurai street is the image most people carry away from Kakunodate. Willow leaves sway against the black wooden walls, weeping cherry trees lean over the road, and every angle looks like a photograph. Several residences open their interiors to visitors, so you can step inside and see how these families actually lived.

Riding a rickshaw is also worth doing. The pullers know the district in detail, and their commentary fills in the history you would otherwise walk straight past. On a local recommendation we had lunch at Kosendo, where the noodles come in a clean, flying-fish (ago) broth.

Akita is also one of Japan’s great rice-growing regions, and it shows at the table. See the cherry blossoms in spring

Kakunodate is one of Tohoku’s best-known cherry blossom destinations, and it offers two kinds at once. The weeping cherry trees along the samurai street are designated a National Natural Monument, while about two kilometres of Somei-yoshino line the bank of the Hinokinai River. In a single day you can see both the town blossoms and the riverside tunnel of pink.

One practical note: accommodation in Kakunodate books out early for cherry blossom season.
